RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
