Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe United the Gap Between Music Fans

Marking two decades after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the opportunity to become a rock star. Not in reality, but try telling that someone who's nailed the epic lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the display synchronized to the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, creating the feel of an authentic live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising billion-dollar franchise which made a significant impact for many of the artists included, introducing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the cost prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was the number of parents reached out and thanked us for exposing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series brought classic rock back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as outdated material, but then once it got featured on the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's first record was still unreleased in the US, so Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group during their US tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles Enduring Impact

Music's biggest acts soon capitalised on the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and related stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold more than half a million units upon release, while demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is difficult even in expert mode, not to mention performed at double speed while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed it took months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a profitable run when their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I recall the record label informing us that we were selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it risked eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got a unique musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of being a music icon on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community active, and there’s expectations of something from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought those games could be like Madden allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue with new generations.”
