The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
