Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
