Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest certain decisions from the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
